Summer Hill is primarily a residential suburb, located in the west of Sydney and bordered by suburbs of Dulwich Hill, Lewisham, Haberfield and Ashfield. A long time ago, this place was actually a fashionable and genteel suburb, and known by the name of ‘Sunning Hill’. Around then, the region served as a favourite residence of gentlemen stockbrokers and was filled with small and simple shops catering to the needs of the lower middle and working classes.

In course of time, the face of Summer Hill began to change gradually and people started flocking to the area for enjoying its unpretentious countryside atmosphere and voluminous traces of Federation and Victorian architecture as well as Italianate and Gothic Revival. Summer Hill is quite popular for as many as 131 recognised heritage-listed properties, including the stately mansions Hillingdon and Carleton. Although there is no paucity of attraction in this beautiful place, the real drawing card is the unique intimacy of the community living here.

Being situated only 8 kilometres away from the Central Business District of Sydney, Summer Hill is well-facilitated with bus and rail transport services. The bus routes 480 and 483 can be used for reaching the Town Hall. The Summer Hill railway station is only few minutes away on foot for those who want to reach the Central station.

As had been mentioned already, the place enjoys a rural atmosphere. One of the major landmarks is the Trinity Church of England Boys’ Grammar School, which was built in the year 1926. The Town Square features a fountain and seating, and also the shopping precinct that has been developed around it. There is an independently functioning Fresco supermarket within the area bordered by the Prospect, Old Canterbury, Liverpool and Parramatta roads. One would hardly have any difficulty to find a local dentist, optometrist, green grocer or butcher around the place. There are also many parks in close proximity, including the Petersham Park, the Dulwich Hill’s Johnson Park, and Marrickville Park with tennis courts. Notable government and private schools in and around the area include the Summer Hill primary School, the Ashfield Primary School, Trinity Grammar and the De La Salle College for Boys. Cafe and restaurant culture thrives majorly along the Lackey and Smith street with a number of funky coffee shops, eye-catching pubs and restaurants.

In close vicinity of Summer Hill, there are many hotels, motels, inns and other lodging facilities. In fact, a majority of these facilities provide some of the most comfortable and Budget Accommodation in Sydney.

Set just behind the Norton Street is the popular Italian Forum, a piazza inspired classically that features trattorias, cafes, shops and galleries. The relaxing ambience of this open space makes it an ideal place for indulging in the al-fresco dining and ‘Mondo Italiano’ experiences of Leichhardt. The Sapore Della Vigna, which is situated near the fountain of Italian Forum, provides some exemplary specials with the traditional Italian delicacies.

Besides offering a heaven to foodies, Leichhardt is also not disappointing to a bookworm. The Berkelouw Books’ Wine Bar allows visitors to take away sample wines and a treat of cheese platter while going through the extensive book collection. For a shopping fanatic, there are ample shopping hubs on Flood Street. There is also a cinema hall on Norton Street known as the Palace Cinema, which screens the latest world, mainstream and art films.

The former Sydney Showground in Moore Park was the site of Sydney Royal Easter Show in NSW, Australia from 1882-1997. The Show afterwards, was however, moved to the new Sydney Showground in Homebush Bay, which was in fact built for Sydney 2000 Olympic Games. The old site at that time was leased to News Corporation on a ninety-nine year lease from Government of NSW to be used by Fox Studios Australia. The site is now a part of The Entertainment Quarter. It is very near to some of the biggest public venues in Sydney, namely the Sydney Football Stadium, Sydney Cricket Ground and Hordern Pavilion.

There is a great history of Sydney Showground. In the year 1811, the Governor declared the second common of Sydney. After seventy-one years, the Agricultural Society, set up its ground within the site, which thus became the place of Royal Easter Show-the annual expression of pride in Australia. The time from 1902-1919 witnessed the expansion of Showgrounds to south.

Showground was the place where Australian Rugby League Football's first rugby football game was held. The match was held between NSW team and NZ's rebel 1907 tourists. The match attracted a crowd of about 20,000 at that time. Showground was also the venue where the the grand finale of NSWRFL was held. The venue even hosted nearly two hundred first grade rugby league games.

The Royal Agricultural Showground was then the venue for first Ashes test on Australian soil. Right from 1920 to 1937, the Showgrounds were expanded more to north, with addition of judging rings and new squares. Dominant visual aspects of this complex by the time were peripheral walls, tower of Anthony Horden building and Member's Grandstand clock tower.

The sesqui-centenary celebrations led to a building programme at Showground. Apart from rugby league matches and Royal Easter Show, World Series Cricket matches were held here in late 1970s. At that time, Sydney Cricket Ground was however unavailable. 90,000 people could be accommodated in the Old Showground.

Main Arena in Sydney Showground was even used as the Harness racing venue. From 1926, the this Arena doubled as Sydney Showground Speedway, which attracted a huge spectators all through the summer. It was considered to be the quickest speedway in the whole world in 1937. Although motorcycles were the first vehicles to race at Showgrounds, speedcars, sidecars, stock cars, demolition derbies and Super Modifieds soon joined the list.

Many popular artists like David Bowie, Led Zeppelin, AC/DC, KISS and others performed here at this venue. In the Sydney Showgrounds the annual music festival Big Day Out was even held every year from 1992-1997.

Motels

Motels are establishments that provide short-term as well as long-term lodging. They have a good access to the national road network and have exterior entrances and open walkways. They are less expensive than hotels because of lack of amenities, locations etc. Generally located on highways, but can even be found near outskirts of the towns and many other places where there are rural areas, train stations. There are minimal amenities like free secure undercover parking, free wireless internet, free foxtel cable, guest laundry, fine dining restaurants, fast food restaurants and more. Hostels are a wonderful accommodation option for budget travellers. Their rooms are dorm-style with various kinds of facilities shared. Many hostels even offer small rooms, doubles and singles for couples and solo travellers who aren't interested to sleep in a dorm-style room. Sometimes, hostels in Sydney offer a lot more amenities than the hotels in Sydney. They have kitchen facilities as well.

Apartments

Apartments are double the cost than a hostel dorm room but are undoubtedly cheaper than hotels. However, they can become a lot more cheaper if the traveller plans to share the apartment with others. It will lower the cost per head. Apartments are basically furnished and rented on a short term basis or a week by week basis. They are a great accommodation option for travellers who are looking for a respite from the hordes and dorms and don't want to stay in a hotel room. Travellers staying here also get the facility of cooking their own food, which not only reduces their food costs but also helps keep their health in a good condition.
